Thanks to jdunderground, I have been inspired to start the medical version- mdunderground. Since medicine is going to hell in a handbasket, I strongly feel we need a forum of our own. The starting of this forum is even more imperative since SDN (Student Doctor Network) has been undergoing a recent Chinese crackdown where more vocal members have been threatened and outright banned for speaking the truth of the harsh realities of pursuing a career in medicine. Numerous threads have also been moved, locked, and outright shut down. I welcome you to mdunderground where the truth shall finally prevail over censorship.

medicinesux,
thanks for starting this website to get the truth out about topics like the coming residency bloodbath, the emergence of the "noctor", the oversupply problem facing caribs, and the economic horrors of 2015 medical school loans. I think we should make some introductory posts so people know what we're talking about.

unlike paralegals, noctors( aka "knock off" doctors) can practice completely independently without supervision. They can see their own patients, diagnose them, and write prescriptions all on their own without a medical license. At least when you are seen by a P.A. (physician assistant), you know that a doctor is supervising their work. This is not the case with a "noctor".

What pray tell is a "noctor"? Does it have any relation to the "noid" of late 1980s fame?

Nurse Doctor. Check out the other threads, but basically an RN can get their degree in nurse practioning completely online, with fewer clinical hours (hands on patient time) than most first year medical students.
Those Master's prepared NPs are being converted to "Doctor of Nurse Practioning", or DNPs, which can also be accomplished online. It's degree inflation at its worst, and I think that healthcare has the market on degree inflation these days.
The DNPs can "practice", in the worst sense of the word, after an online course and 700 hours, without any supervision of a physician. The general public won't know the difference when they introduce themselves as "Doctor"...

Any thoughts on how this could be better regulated? Will state medical boards ever step in and put a stop to this "noctoring"?

I would love to hear what the talk out there is on the coming residency blood bath. So glad I am through all that shit. Of course, I am old enough to be pre-work hour regs.

I am sick of the DO bias in SDN. Not surprising since it's started by a DO. DO and MD aren't equal, not by a long way.

My wife got good (~%80 percentile) USMLE scores, got a decent allopathic residency in EM, and is making 250k as an emergency room physician in a major US city, and is a DO Remind me how they aren't equal, I forgot.
(note: I was skeptical of her getting a "lesser degree" at first as well.)

oh yeah, I am sure your wife can make good money by being a DO, we have a such shortage of physicians now that most major cities would hire someone with a pulse and a MD or DO degree. All it takes is a highly publicized case where DO's poorer clinical education come into question, then the deck of card would fall.

But it isnt poorer...she rotates with allopathic students in hospitals that are part of national networks. I still am confused as to what you're alluding to. The bias is just silly. I'd be loathe to be treated by either an MD or DO that could not pass the USMLE on the first try. All that matters is good board scores (USMLE) and a respectable residency in a large hospital...

So income earning is automatically the marker of equality? What about the ability to properly provide for a patient? Why doesn't she practice her Osteopathic Hocus Pocus in the emergency room?

listen, my friend. Your wife got into a DO school because it has a lower standard of admissions and MUCH lower standard of clinical education on the average.
USMLE is a minimum qualification test. It does not prove competency at all.
Your wife jumped through a loop hole that allowed DO students to use our job placement system. You even stated that she got an "allopathic" residency, because the A word is an important qualifer, a sign that she escaped the steaming pile of shit the osteopathic graduate medical education is.
