I see a lot of bemoaning on this forum about the fact that nurse practitioners are starting to take over a lot of the duties traditionally assigned to doctors. Boo-hoo. Truth is, 99% of everything I've ever seen a doctor for could have been resolved by a competent nurse practitioner.

There's a clinic I go to when I'm under the weather with something I can't shake on my own- everytime, my blood pressure is checked, ears looked at, a few questions asked about allergies, and I'm given some antibiotics. Then, magically, I get better a few days later. A well-trained chimp or robot could do that with alarming accuracy.

Of course, doctors are still needed for surgery. But the thread about the nurse practitioner who had a dermatology concentration that got everyone riled up- how hard is it to sent results to a lab or eyeball a skin disease and come up with treatment?

I think that doctors realized they could let nurses do more and more of the work, which initially saved the doctor's time and made them more money. Now, the tables have turned, and doctors are realizing they helped create the "monster" that's driving their value down, and forcing them to compete in a free market for the save level of service.

the thing is... GP's dont even want their job anymore because they don't make enough money to pay off their loans so instead most of them are opting to specialize - this is where the NP and PA's a are swooping in.

This is what makes the physician's job prospects in the future look bleak. I could be wrong, I don't know everything.

So, how much cheaper are these DrNurses going to be after they start getting hit with lawsuits and have to pay $1-10k per month in medmal premiums?
