I am headed to law school (snicker all you want) but my friend is headed to Wright State University Medical School. WSU and Toledo were the only two med schools he got into I believe. He said "it doesn't matter where you go, just so long as you get in somewhere." I think he has like a 3.7 GPA and a 28 MCAT. I told him maybe he should retake. My mom is on an admissions committee for a well known med school and said his MCAT is just way too low. Anyway, is he headed for a lot of fail/ family practice residency?
I swear I am not a troll. Just someone curious about lower ranked med schools.
Edit: He will be taking out 6 figure loans to finance his education.

Your friend should check out the thread below. There is definitely going to be increased competition for residency spots in the near future. Med school tuitions are going through the roof while Obamacare will be kicking in full force 2014. I hope he REALLY loves medicine.

He's in a fucking better situation then you are. Everyone, even from the most TTT of med schools is going to get residency.
Sure, he might not get into a "prestigious" practice area or be in a position to give lectures on the groundbreaking aspects of neuroscience- but he will make 6 digits treating kids with the common cold unlike law fucktards like us.

He may be much ridiculed on medicine internet fora, but the reality is that he will get a residency of some kind, barring any serious academic/social/legal issues (and even then!). Sure, his job might not be glamorous but he'll still make a decent living even with the crushing student loans if he's careful about finances. On the other hand, he could totally rock med school and have it easy in Derm, Rads, or whatever. The MCAT score doesn't indicate that as likely but it's not a 100% accurate indicate either. Karl is right. He might be a miserable bastard one day, but he'll most likely be better off than you (unless you're going to T1-5 and not an idiot).

A few things:
KarlMarx, we have hit a point where in the next few years, graduating from an american medical school is no longer going to guarantee a residency. The gov't fixes (not the AMA like people believe) the number of slots and the number of medical schools and graduates keeps rising. Competition has nowhere to go but up.
I am astounded by grads coming out now with $300K in loans and if they aren't top of the class they are looking at low to middling specialties/general practice. And realize please that not all docs make $400K. Starting can run as low as 90K (before taxes) for peds, and that pediatrician can now owe 300K. I have seen starting IM run as low as $120K in NY! Tough to live on with $200K in loans and a family!
And no one can tell you what Obama is going to do to medicine in the next few years. I advise people not to go into medicine.
Lastly, amongst colleagues WSU students/residents have a reputation for laziness. That's not to say 100% are lazy, but the reputation is there and it is not just me that thinks this. Tell your friend he can do fine there with hard work (as in any american medical school) and good connections. Good connections do not come from laziness. Tell him to be the exception at WSU and he will do well with docs that take their students/residents.

I'm pretty sure American-born students coming from American schools that managed to graduate will be able to find a residency. They'll just displace, the Carribean/foreigners/DO's(?) to make room. Also, everybody wants to live in NYC or LA, which is just plain not practical for most since those markets are already saturated and expensive to boot.
If you're OK with being a GP, pediatrician, or possibly OB/Gyn (not sure about that last one), and you don't mind living in the Midwest, you'll be OK. Those midwestern cities are clamoring for docs and pay much much better and are much much cheaper to live in.
Obviously, just my opinion...
