How easy is it to practice at one department at a law firm, say corporte, to be later transfer to another, say litigation? Is it something almost unheard of?
Do people move around within a medium size firm at all or do they almost always stay at a certain practice?

Only in a big firm and then within the same general group of practice: for example, from tax to trusts & estates, or from tax to real estate, meaning from one type of transaction practice to another.
I tried switching from litigation to corporate at one point. I had a large firm background, but got rejected anyway.

What you all are saying is that what you started with is what you will end up with when it comes to law? What if someone started with corporate law and decides to go to litigation or vice versa....totally out of luck?

depends on the firm but the larger they are, the more stringent they may be about inter-dept transfers.
I only know 1 person recently who was able to transfer from 1 dept to another but she was about to get canned and I think a partner changed his mind and decided to move her to a less stressful dept instead of just canning her since she was fucking up at work only because of upcoming wedding plans. She wasn't at BigLaw though (80 atty Midsized firm).
