Alright I need to do this thing, but I can't figure out if I need the whole thing; I remember as part of the process of applying through the Second Department, I had to take a day-long ethics course; is the CLE requirement for NY state for your first year above and beyond this class? Or does that count towards the ethics course requirements?

First registration cycle is two years and requires 32 credits. The bridge the gap 1 and 2 of NYCLA will cover it.

Right but they had me take an ethics course before my C&F interview, where does that fit in?

I took it too. Its the orientation to the profession course and its free. No dollars and no credits. Its just a refresher so you are scared straight on the ethics issues many lawyers before us screwed themselves on.

Has anyone ever been audited by the judicial departments in New York for CLEs? If they don't check, whats the point of even taking them? They're expensive as hell too.

people get audited randomly. i'd guess that if you're just slightly behind, you just have to catch up ASAP... but that if you're substantially more than one renewal term behind, you could easily be suspended... and then you're fucked, aren't you?

why are you renewing if you're not practicing and have no intention of practicing?

they might have hardship waivers, i suppose.

The following are exempt from NY CLEs:

attorneys who do not practice in New York
full-time, active-duty members of the US Armed Forces
attorneys admitted pro hoc vice
attorneys who certify that they are retired from practice
newly admitted attorneys will certify their compliance by so indicating on their biennial registration form—there will be random audits to monitor compliance
non-compliant attorneys will be reported to their Appellate Division for appropriate action

If you are not practicing law (working in a job that does not dispense legal advice) aren't you exempt from the NY CLE requirements? Unfortunately, NJ just implemented CLE and no such exemption exists.

Also, I know NJ gives full credit to NY CLE - is the reverse also true, that is does NY recognize CLE courses taken in NJ?
