Law School is the Best!
LexCorde (Jul 28 - 10:45 am)
There is nothing wrong with going to law school. The opportunity presents an incredible intellectual challenge unmatched by any program or curriculum out there. Everyone should experience it. There are plenty of opportunities with a law degree. You do not have to work the traditional 9-5 shift at some office job being yelled at by some irate tyrant of a boss nor do you have to settle for some daily commute. You are an independent agent licensed by the highest authority in the state and capable of helping those in need through the actual practice of law, which includes many, many opportunities. You don't have to collect a check from any company or firm, just find a solo who will let you do some work and mentor you or join a pro bono outfit and your path to riches will come. I love being a lawyer!!!

Agreed. People here are overly negative. You have to work hard but it can be a very fulfilling career.

oh, lawdy, you went to the finest schools, but you only used to choused in it.
you wrote:
"You have to work hard but it can be a very fulfilling career."
HARD is RELATIVE. If you say "work HARD" to person X, you are telling person X to do Y amount of work, which meets the threshold for hard work and thus will secure employment.
Then you say "work HARD" to person X+1, you can assign a value to that amount of work, say Y. If person X+1 does Y amount of work, then he will he have a career in the law, right?
But in the real world the amount of hard work done does not increase the amount of legal work NEEDED. In fact, the amount of legal work required by CLIENTS is INDEPENDENT OF THE AMOUNT OF WORK (Y) DONE.
The demand for lawyers is therefore unrelated to the amount of work Y done.
Your advice tells people that there is an UNLIMITED demand for lawyers. This is what is implied by telling people that all you need to do is work hard.
If young people believe your advice (that there is an unlimited amount of high paying jobs available (if one only does the required amount of work), then they SHOULD go to law school. In fact, under the logic of your rubric, ALL young people should go to law school.
Hence, because there demand is limited, and your advice says the exact opposite (that demand is limitless) then at some time T in the future, if you continue to say "work HARD and you will have a good paying law job" to people, there will come a person N+Z at time T, where the value of work required to make a living is not Y any longer, but Y+K, where K is the additional amount of work needed to OUT-COMPETE all those who previously received and took your advice.
As iterations of advice continue as time goes past T, so will the value of K increase.
K increases without bound, save for time constraints and the physical limitations of the human body. What a great world the graduates of the elite schools would create for us...
THis is called a race to the bottom,
And the grads of the elite schools get picked to be our unelected federal judges/lords. Admin is a grad of one of those schools, and he adheres to their philosophies here. They are the enemy of the working class.
Once again, we see that the grads of the elite schools continue to ignore the "turtles all the way down" logical fallacy.

LOL! That was a funny remark to my post. I think being a lawyer is absolutely fantastic. Even when you're looking for a job, the opportunity of searching and networking amongst peers are bountiful. I am available to anyone who wants to chat.

A lawyer (crazy perpetual political candidate, no less; has been out of LS for 20+ years) tried doing that in my town. Had posters and handbills, no less. I almost sodomized the jackass with a broom handle... almost.

There are plenty of successful lawyers practicing as we speak. The ones that have work wont be posting on forums.

There might even be five or six who actually enjoy what they are doing, too. Does posting as "Admin" automatically give you credibility? I should just post as "God" from now on.

Wait, so of the set of lawyers in the country, only 5-6 enjoy what they do??? I never said a thing about credibility but you tell me if THAT sounds credible.
I have truly seen lawyers enjoy what they do. And if it werent for the extremely long hours, many more would enjoy what they do. Not everyone is cut out for it obviously. Just like not everyone is cut out to be a pilot or a carpenter. But some are. I know of retired biglaw partners that still volunteer their time to nonprofits. They could be doing anything with their time and the millions they've saved up. But this is what they enjoy. And that is probably why they were successful to begin with.

Awwww, that's sweet. You've seen partners volunteering their time for nonprofits. You should start a blog about how wonderful lawyers are! No, really, I'd read it!
And I totally forgot - the substance abuse and suicide rates among pilots and carpenters are WAY higher than for lawyers. Silly me.

Admin is right that there are biglaw partners that volunteer at non profits -- or at least I know one who volunteers at the non profit where I am a part time contract attorney. He is also a really nice guy, and since biglaw is and always was out of my league he is probably the only biglaw partner I will ever get to know.
I am curious Admin, what is your motive for being the Admin of this board if you have such a positive attitude? Do you at least agree that law school is a bad investment for most people?
Also, I am almost positive LexCorde is a flame. He seems a bit over the top.

Thanks for the wonderful comments. I was straight on with my post. In answer to the questions asked earlier, I practice criminal law, I am newly-admitted, and I am networking to find my first job where I plan to be a major success. Anyone wanna chat, my aim is my name.

Still, a 6.5 / 10.

I think law school is a great investment and many people ought to try it. It is an opportunity to truly brighten your horizons and meet great minds. Don't you remember what it was like when you were a law student? Those in school now only want to accomplish it.
