I meet all the minimum qualifications for certain jobs but can't get an interview

I'm deciding to throw in the towel on being a lawyer. After a year of unemployment, it's obviously never going to happen.
WHAT can I do instead that will allow me to earn enough money to have my own apartment, etc.? Everything I know I can get hired to do pays $8 an hour.

I don't even get calls back when I meet the minimum and the ideal (or desired) qualifications.
It's all HR insanity anyways.

I am in your boat too. i'm hoping that once I get admitted, I can get my real estate broker's license, and start working as a real estate agent.

along the same line as real estate agent, there is also insurance sales. I was all lined up to work as an insurance salesman, until i realized that I would get no leads from the company, and was expected to sell to my friends of friends etc. What a nightmare. I bailed on that.
if you're in NY though, it's my understanding that you can get both your brokers license and insurance sales license without any exams etc if you're admitted to practice...just throwing that out there.

I'm not admitted in NY.
The real estate market is dead here. I don't know anything about insurance sales other than that I hate insurance salesmen. I got a call from one at 8:00 a.m. not too long ago. I can't imagine doing that the rest of my life.

I completely agree that there's nothing worse than a real estate agent/broker, but please, another idea? If i could find a sweet ditch digging job on craigslist I'd be doing that already, but I cant, i haven't, I'll keep looking. I applied to be a dishwasher in a thai restaurant the other day. keeping my fingers crossed.

I just applied to work in the mail room for a corporation on a part-time basis. Maybe if my uncle worked there....

I think in NY - being a lawyer only entitles you to obtain a broker's license, not to sell insurance.

emigrate to canada based on your education and then go do blue collar work in the oil patch and the northwest. Save all your $ and then retire early

get your CDL and go up to Alaska, and be an ice road trucker. i would take that any day over performing mind-numbing legal analysis.
You can also get a job as a deckhand on a boat fishing/crabbing up there. My uncle did that back in the day.
